The Āpōpō Guide recognises the significance of te ao Māori and its relevance to our unique context. By weaving te ao Māori principles through the Āpōpō Guide, we create something that reflects the values of Aotearoa New Zealand and fosters a holistic and inclusive approach to asset management.
Within the Āpōpō Guide, you will find examples of how te ao Māori enhances infrastructure asset management in various ways. For instance, the guide explores the integration of Māori cultural indicators and values into performance assessment, acknowledging the relevance of Mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge and wisdom) in measuring asset sustainability and social impact.
The Āpōpō Guide is more than a compilation of asset management practices – it is a celebration of the richness and diversity of our culture. By embracing te ao Māori, we enhance the effectiveness, sustainability, and inclusivity of infrastructure asset management practices in Aotearoa New Zealand.
If you’re interested in finding out more about how te ao Māori relates to infrastructure asset management, consider taking our digital badge AO 101 – Introduction to Te Ao Māori.
The Āpōpō Guide is different. It is a living, interactive resource of globally sourced asset management guidance and experience – specifically tailored for our Aotearoa New Zealand context.
The Āpōpō Guide gives you information you can’t get anywhere else: how to apply ISO standards and international good practice in Aotearoa New Zealand – reflecting the principles of te ao Māori and mātauranga Māori.
For infrastructure asset management professionals practicing in Aotearoa New Zealand, the Āpōpō Guide is your essential companion.
The Āpōpō Guide weaves together the principles of te ao Māori with our interpretation of international best practice in infrastructure asset management. Our primary reference for international best practice is the ISO 5500X series of standards.
However, the Āpōpō Guide also aligns with other international best practice resources such as the GFMAM Asset Management Landscape, an internationally-recognised document that provides a detailed and structured view of the key concepts, principles, and practices essential for effective asset management.

In this first quarter of 2025, I have had some engagement with the Honorable Chris Bishop, Minister for Infrastructure, as
Infrastructure often hides in plain sight. It’s the roads we drive, the water we drink, and the networks that keep the lights on. Most people take these systems for granted, noticing them only when they fail.
The Āpōpō Guide now tightly aligns with the GFMAM Asset Management Landscape, creating a seamless reference to recognised international standards.
From the beginning the Āpōpō Guide aligned with the ISO 5500x standards, but now we’ve ensured the Āpōpō Guide aligns with the GFMAM Asset Management Landscape as well.
Āpōpō Professional Practice Accreditation now aligns with the Global Certification Scheme governed by World Partners in Asset Management (WPiAM). Read more...
