AO 101 - Introduction to Te Ao Māori

Overview

As Aotearoa New Zealand continues to grow and develop, it’s vital we understand and appreciate our rich history and culture.

Our history and culture shape who we are as a nation and influence the decisions we make today. Understanding and respecting the bicultural foundations of our society is essential to building a sustainable future where all New Zealanders can thrive.

AO 101 – Introduction to Te Ao Māori will take you on a journey through the history of Māori in Aotearoa, from their arrival to the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (The Treaty of Waitangi) and beyond. We’ll explore how this history is connected to the practice of infrastructure asset management in Aotearoa New Zealand today, and how understanding and incorporating a te ao Māori perspective can improve our management of assets for the benefit of everyone.

Through interactive lessons, case studies, and practical examples, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the bicultural foundations of our constitutional identity, and the important role that Māori knowledge and values play in asset management.

By the end of this course, you will understand how incorporating te ao Māori (the Māori worldview) into your asset management practices contributes to a more sustainable and equitable future for all New Zealanders.

Rather than providing comprehensive details, AO 101 provides a broad introduction that we hope inspires you to learn more.
