Roadway Fault Guideline: Pavement, Surfacing and Shoulder

This guideline enables the consistent identification and categorisation of pavement (sealed and unsealed), surface and shoulder asset faults.

It has been developed by the Āpōpō RIMS special interest group in parallel with the Waka Kotahi Asset Management Data Standard (AMDS), with the goal that the faults listed within this guideline directly link to the list of accepted faults within the AMDS Fault Schema.

This guideline sets the common terminology for assessing a road fault. The intention is to standardise a common data structure and business rules for fault assessment or detection, allowing for the eventual progression to video and machine learning to detect, categorise severity and quantify the extent of the individual Road faults.

The adoption of this guideline will enable more effective operational, tactical and strategic decision making, sharing of information, and benchmarking of networks.

A higher objective of this road fault guideline is the recognition of the value of faults in our wider planning, decision making and reporting processes. Traditionally, fault inspections have been associated with a purpose of programming operational works. If consistent and well defined, the value of faults will extend well beyond current operational use.
