    Description

    Overview

Valuation and depreciation aren’t just accounting exercises – they shape the big decisions we make about infrastructure. Whether it’s planning renewals, setting budgets, responding to climate risk, or justifying investment in community assets, an advanced understanding of valuation is essential for good asset management.

This course is designed for people who already understand the basics of asset management and want to explore how valuation fits into the picture. You won’t become a valuer by completing this course. Instead, it’s about making sense of the valuation process so you can ask the right questions, apply the results with confidence, and work effectively with valuers when the time comes.

We’ll draw directly on the updated New Zealand Infrastructure Asset Valuation and Depreciation Guidelines to explore how valuations are carried out, how they connect to asset strategy, and why they matter in practice – from audit trails to insurance to long-term planning.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

    1. Explain why infrastructure assets are valued and how these valuations contribute to financial and asset management decisions.
    2. Work constructively with valuers, including briefing them, clarifying assumptions, and reviewing outputs.
    3. Evaluate key valuation concepts – including depreciation, fair value, and the ODRC methodology – in the context of infrastructure asset management.
    4. Interpret and critique key elements of valuation reports, identifying how assumptions about asset data, useful lives, and depreciation methods affect the results and their application.
    5. Assess the implication of emerging trends on valuation practices, such as climate change, sustainability, and the emergence of natural capital valuation.

On completion, you will be awarded a digital badge which can be saved and shared.

    Who Should Attend

This course is for people who work alongside valuers, not as valuers. If you’re in a role where you need to make sense of valuation reports, apply them in decision-making, or make sure they’re feeding into long-term planning, this course is for you.

It’s particularly relevant for those working in asset-owning public organisations – like councils, utilities, and other infrastructure providers – who want to feel more confident engaging with valuers, auditors, and finance teams.

You’ll get the most out of this course if you already understand the fundamentals of asset management planning and are looking to strengthen the financial and technical side of your practice.

    Typical Attendees Include

    • Asset managers using valuation data to support renewals, capital planning, or AMP updates
