, meet Kareena

You might have met Kareena in AM 201 – Telling the Story of Asset Management.
Right now, Kareena is supporting the Facilities Manager at Āhuahua District Council as they take a close look at the Āhuahua War Memorial Hall.
About the Hall
Āhuahua War Memorial Hall was built in 1953 to honour the district’s service members returning from war. Since then, it has been the heart of the community, hosting everything from ANZAC Day services, school prizegivings, community meetings, to weekly line dancing and the odd heated debate about council rates.
However, recent seismic assessments have confirmed that the hall falls well below modern earthquake standards, and council’s engineers have rated it as earthquake-prone.
The Problem
The Council now faces a big decision: what to do with the hall? The community loves it. The RSA is concerned about preserving its history. But strengthening the building will cost around $600,000, and rebuilding a modern facility could cost $1.5 million, which is half the council’s entire annual capital budget.
The other option? Close it down – but that risks community outrage and leaves no venue for key events.
Kareena has been asked to support the Community Facilities Manager in exploring what to do next. She’s aware this decision isn’t just about money – it’s about risk, community expectations, and long-term stewardship.
