The last Āpōpō branch event of 2025, the Dunedin Hui hosted by the Otago Polytechnic and supported by Engineering NZ had a whopping 20 presenters!
At the Dunedin Hui held on the 9-10th December 2025, with the student presentations and subject matter experts, we heard about asset management from the perspective of many different industries.
We had so many different industries and sectors represented and that was the theme of the event.

Tuesday was a day of presentations, from 9 until 4.30pm, with an absolutely packed-to-the-rafters agenda:
- Sarah Hexamer, Otago Polytechnic
- Otago Polytech insight, Tony Green, Otago Polytechnic
- Engineering NZ, Michelle Bong, Natalie Storm
- Āpōpō Branch Chair, Mark Baker,
- Dunedin Airport update, Nick Rodger, Dunedin Airport
- Eden Maher, Waitaki DC
- Kim Donnelly, Hauraki DC
- Pierre Kotze, Clutha DC
- Consistent condition data collection (CCDC) project Peter Tomlinson, Dunedin City Council
- Dry Milk Plant and resilience planning, Oceania Dairy Ian Harrington, Oceania Dairies

It was a real privilege to meet the range of asset managers who attended this hui, and hear their journey to asset management. It really did highlight the mixture of backgrounds, training and experience our asset managers have.

Wednesday 10 Dec – Site Tours
Wednesday’s site tour to the new KiwiRail Hillside Workshops was fascinating. Seeing inside this purpose-built facility and the huge volume of new wagons they are assembling was truly impressive.

Our tour of Logan Point Quarry, operated by Blackhead Quarries Ltd took us up the hill behind the stadium with stunning views of the city. Having this quarry in Dunedin city is a substantial cost saving as we learnt that costs double with each 30km of transport. The final site tour was of the Dunedin City Council’s upgraded Ross Creek Reservoir.

A huge thanks to Otago Polytechnic Sarah Hexamer as the host, supported by data guru Gemma Mathieson, and to Engineering NZ Michelle Bong and Natalie Storm, and Apopo branch chair Mark Baker for supporting this event.
As well as event sponsors Buller Electricity Limited and Infrastructure Decision Support NZ (IDS NZ)!
